Chapter 5 - Leadership and Involvement in society

Being involved in communities and groups were part and parcel of growing up. I still remember how my family would take time to be lead in group activities, how my parents taught the less privileged children whilst the kids observed attentively, how we at a tender age attended to drug addicts and prisoners and how my brother and I were brought to orphanages and nursing homes for the elderly to care for those less fortunate than us. As I grew up, I always felt that I could do more for these disadvantaged groups.

I can still remember how I would feel utterly angry when dad and mum had told me that a certain elderly person was sent into the nursing home because their children felt that their parents were too old to handle. I always felt that more could be done for these less fortunate and that the more blessed ones should try their best to provide gleams of joy for those. I felt that education in Singapore should not only focus on achieving well in books but students should be taught more about the less fortunate and how we can make a difference to the groups of minorities.
It is perhaps with these beliefs that I at a young age knew what I wanted to do with my life, that to; understand people, groups and its dynamics and to provide help, assistance, and educate others about giving more to the less privileged and to groups that the society usually forgets and perhaps shun or/and ignore.

Ever since realizing this dream, i have tried to individually and independently be involved in communities and groups especially in the last three years. These experiences vary from counseling teens with behavioural problems, mentoring youth in churches or just teaching younger ones on life skills.

I am thankful for these countless opportunities to lead and be involve in the society. These avenues of service has allowed me to be strong in three areas of my life.

Firstly, i have through these experiences learnt to communicate in ways that would bring forth my message across in respectful ways. This strength that i have allows me to hold a conversation with even those of higher position and older than me.

Secondly, i have also learnt to build solid relationships on the foundation of trust through my involvement in the society. Trust brings anyone far in life. It is said that it takes years to build trust and once this trust is lost, it might never return. I have lost many people's trust through my passiveness. carelessness but through these periods of pain, i have learnt that once i have gained someones trust, i should never abuse it but treasure it for through this developed friendships, i am and can depend on those who are ever willing to give me a helping hand to succeed in life.

Last but not least, i have also understood clearly that as a leader, i have to actively invest my time to develop the people who have been and are under my charge. One valuable relationship that i have with a follower of mine can be seen here.
